Programme Introduction
Explore the mathematical world with our Enrichment Mathematics Programme
The programme covers both pure and applied mathematics. With a solid foundation in pure mathematics, students can develop a feasible research path in advanced mathematics, statistics and computer science. Students can also enrol in the double stream of Enrichment Mathematics, and Computational and Applied Mathematics (CAM). The knowledge acquired in applied mathematics courses, such as numerical computations and contemporary techniques of big data analytics, can lead students to the realm of applied sciences, covering finance, engineering, business, marketing and medical research.
Ranking
31st among 200, 2nd in Asia, top in Hong Kong (US News 2019)
31st among 501, 5th in Asia, top in Hong Kong (QS 2020)
Established in 1963, the Department of Mathematics has gradually developed into a world-class department of the highest standard of excellence in education, research and knowledge transfer. It is ranked consistently among the very best Mathematics Departments in Asia and was ranked 37th and 41st globally in the World University Rankings by Subject in 2021 and 2022, respectively. The successful collaboration between the Department of Mathematics and the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMS) has made CUHK one of the most important mathematical research centres in the world, with a strong and growing impact on the development of mathematics in Hong Kong, the rest of the Greater Bay Area, and even China as a whole.
Craft Your Path
- Wide Curriculum: The Department offers a wide range of courses in both pure and applied mathematics. Students can choose elective courses according to their interest and stream orientation.
- Highly Flexible Curriculum: Students have a high degree of freedom in choosing their preferred minor programme. The most popular are statistics, computer-related programmes, business administration, and economics.
- Experiential Learning Opportunity: There are plenty of training opportunities for our students. In addition to lectures, our undergraduates can enrich their learning experience in our China and Overseas Summer Internship and Exchange (COSINE) programme and Undergraduate Research Opportunity Programme (UROP).
Unlock the magic of mathematics and unleash your mathematical potential to solve problems and create a formula for success.
Career Prospects
Upon graduation, our students can apply their mathematical knowledge generically in their future profession in ways that are unique for mathematically trained experts. The career opportunities for mathematics graduates are very diverse. Many pursue an academic career after completing a PhD in a top university, such as MIT, UCLA, Caltech, Princeton, Harvard, Cambridge and Oxford. Many more work as educators, engineers, computer scientists, entrepreneurs and businesspeople after obtaining sufficient mathematical, logical and critical thinking skills, and global vision from exchange programmes and academic conferences, in addition to the MATHN curriculum. Students with these goals in mind can also enter the mathematics programme through the science broad-based admission.
