Programme Introduction
The Comeback of Computers
Established in 1991, the Computer Engineering (CENG) programme focuses on both computer hardware and software. Students study fundamental knowledge of computer engineering, from computer architecture and interfacing to programming, embedded systems and application development. They are also guided to integrate knowledge and theories into practical applications. With the rapid development in VLSI and microprocessors, and thus gadgets like smartphones and tablets, students will have the opportunity to apply their professional knowledge to developing future devices.
Studying in the CENG programme is not just about academics. The Programme also encourages students to participate in placement and internship programmes. Students may spend up to a year working in a real industrial setting. Under the supervision of advisers and companies, they apply in practice what they have learnt in theory. Overseas exchange opportunities are also available for students seeking to learn with peers from diverse backgrounds and to spark new ideas.
For students looking for competitive exposure, the Programme supports them to join various local and overseas competitions, where they can overcome challenges with their sound computer knowledge in a creative yet practical way. Some of our students obtained excellent achievements in renowned competitions, such as the Robocon Hong Kong Contest and the ICPC World Finals.
Innovation and advancement in technology in the future will go far beyond what we imagine today. Pursuing the CENG programme is the first step in equipping students to deal with the challenges in this high-tech era.
Two optional streams are available for students to choose according to their interests:
- Embedded Systems
- VLSI Design & EDA
Department-based Major Allocation
Starting in the 2022-23 academic year, the CENG programme will be under the department-based admission scheme. At the end of their first year of study, students who are admitted to the Computer Science and Engineering programme will be invited to declare their programme choices, either CENG or Computer Science (CSCI). The Department will give due consideration to and try to accommodate the students’ preferences.
Ranking

Dual Degree Option
Students who would like to broaden their learning can continue their studies for an additional year to gain an Integrated Business Administration Bachelor Degree upon completion of the BEng degree in Computer Engineering.
Career Prospects
Over the years, CSE has built up a large alumni network in the computer industry not only in Hong Kong, but also in the US and Mainland China. Many of our graduates have taken up important positions in various organizations and companies, such as the HKSAR government, HSBC, Intel, Microsoft, IBM and Google. Quite a number of our graduates have started their own businesses and become successful entrepreneurs. Others continued their postgraduate studies and took up the teaching and research work in prestigious institutions both locally and overseas. Through this network, our graduates can enjoy a comparative advantage in professional career development.
