Programme Introduction

Nurturing Useful Members of Society

The Programme of Government and Public Administration (GPA) has a strong track record in providing students with excellent training in political science and public policy. Renowned alumni from the Department have served in various sectors in Hong Kong and overseas, including the government, the public sector, academia, business, legal services, mass media, NGOs, education and other professions.

The Programme is unique in Hong Kong, both for its bilingualism (with courses taught in both English and Cantonese) and the diversity of the curriculum. The programme offers a wide variety of courses, covering topics in Political Theory, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Public Administration and Policy, Chinese Politics and Hong Kong Politics. The Department also offers student-exchange opportunities abroad, and a professional practicum that provides practical training for future career development. The Department recently launched a Co-Intelligence programme, which provides internship opportunities in the public and private sectors for GPA undergraduate students. The department is driving towards more professional- and career-oriented training for undergraduate students.

Professors in the Department are locally and internationally renowned for their research and teaching. The department provides an interactive and dynamic learning experience that enhances overall student learning. There is a close relationship between staff and students in the Department, with mentoring for students in their study of political science.

Craft Your Path

The GPA department provides a diversified and dynamic curriculum that helps students develop independent thinking and explore their own interest and abilities. Through active and interactive learning, students can discover and develop their capabilities, and acquire professional skills and knowledge in politics, public affairs and public policy. This will help them think and rethink about how to use what they learn to contribute to society in the future.

Career Prospects

Some people may think that most GPA graduates pursue careers in politics or government, but our graduates can shine in a lot of careers and have very diversified career development paths. We do have a higher percentage of graduates serving in the government and public organizations, but our graduates also work in a wide variety of sectors, including commercial corporations, education, NGOs, teaching and research in universities, and other professional sectors, such as law and social work.

Our training provides students with advanced knowledge of government, policy and public affairs, which gives them an edge in serving in government or public organizations. Our emphasis on independent thinking, analytical ability, presentation skills, adaptability and social sensitivity helps students develop vital skills that allow them to prosper in different professions. Our alumni are employed by various non-governmental corporations and bodies, including JPMorgan Chase & Co., the Societe Generale Group, Goldman Sachs, Hang Seng Bank, MTR Corporation, and the Equal Opportunities Commission.

For those interested in further studies or pursuing an academic career, we provide several postgraduate programs. We have Ph.D. and M.Phil. research degree programmes, and also taught Masters programmes, such as the Master’s Programme in Public Policy (MPUP) and the Master’s Programme in Government and Politics in Greater China (GPGC). The professional and in-depth knowledge and research skills imparted in these programmes allow our graduates to have good placements in different universities and other institutions.
