Programme Introduction

Computer Science and Engineering

Starting in 2022, students who are interested in pursuing the Computer Engineering (CENG) or Computer Science (CSCI) programme can be directly admitted to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering through a “department-based” admission arrangement. Upon completing their first year of study, BCSEN students will then be invited to declare their major in CENG or CSCI. Students with outstanding HKDSE results and good academic performance in their first year of study are guaranteed their first choice of major.

While both CENG and CSCI are rigorously founded on problem solving by programming, data structure and algorithm design, CENG distinguishes itself from other programmes by offering specialized training for students in areas such as mobile embedded systems, microprocessors, VLSI design, hardware-aided security, and supercomputing. CSCI, in contrast, focuses more on software innovation and aims to train students with a flexible curriculum that covers diverse and specialized areas.

(1) The Comeback of Computers – The CENG Programme

The CENG programme was formally established when the Faculty of Engineering was inaugurated in 1991, with an emphasis on both computer hardware and software. It is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).

The CENGN curriculum comprises courses in the following areas:

  • Applications: mobile embedded devices, computer graphics and multimedia processing
  • Computer hardware: circuitry theory, logic system design, computer architecture and interfacing, and computer arithmetic
  • Computer software: programming, data structure, operating systems, algorithms and software engineering
  • Very large-scale integrated (VLSI) circuit design: Computer-aided design and applications
  • System connectivity: computer networks, etc.

(2) Gearing Up for Technological and Digitized Society – The CSCI Programme

The CSCI programme, launched more than 40 years ago, was the first computer science programme in Hong Kong. It is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and has gained an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching.

The CSCIN programme covers the following areas:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Big Data Analytics
  • Bioinformatics
  • Computer and Network Security
  • Computer Systems and Networking
  • Computer-aided Design
  • Databases
  • Digital Hardware Technologies
  • Information Systems
  • Internet
  • Multimedia Technology
  • Programming Languages
  • Software Engineering
  • Theoretical Computer Science

Career Prospects

Over the years, CSE has built up a large alumni network in the computer industry, not only in Hong Kong, but also in the US and Mainland China. Many of our graduates have taken up important positions in various organizations and companies, such as the HKSAR government, HSBC, Intel, Microsoft, IBM and Google. Quite a number of our graduates have started their own businesses and become successful entrepreneurs. Others have continued their postgraduate studies and taken up teaching and research in prestigious institutions both locally and overseas. This network helps our graduates enjoy a comparative advantage in professional career development.

If you are interested in this programme, please review the application requirements and deadlines specific to the respective admission scheme to increase your chances of getting accepted.
