Programme Introduction

Make a Positive Impact on Society by Starting Your Biomedical Sciences Voyage

The BSc in Biomedical Sciences is a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive and integrative Programme that best illustrates the relevance of biomedical sciences in the clinical, pharmaceutical and healthcare settings. The curriculum closely follows modern medical trends, including innovative treatments for, and diagnosis of, diseases and new solutions to address global health demands. Our courses are delivered by leading scientists in the School of Biomedical Sciences, guest speakers from the Clinical Departments of the Faculty of Medicine, and industry experts who share their views on how biomedical advances impact modern medicine.

Our unique curriculum arrangement which provides diverse preparation for careers in research, the biomedical industry, and health services, is the first of its kind among biomedical sciences programmes locally and internationally.

Craft Your Path

Solid and Practical Training
Our curriculum emphasizes practicality and experiential learning. In addition to exposing students to exciting scientific advances, we guide students to explore the bioethical implications of emerging technologies and research in medicine. Courses are co-taught by experts in the field and clinical departments from the Faculty of Medicine, equipping students with a strong foundation in knowledge and principles of biomedical science, while demonstrating its relevance to clinical applications.

Personalized Learning Experiences
We emphasize student-centred, personalized learning experiences. The Major Electives are arranged in three unique Concentration Areas, supplemented by relevant Experiential Learning activities. This unique range of courses is the first of its kind to be included in a biomedical science‐based undergraduate programme in Hong Kong, offering a range of options for students who are interested in research, health policy, pharmaceutical manufacturing management and healthcare services.

Based on their individual interests, students can choose from a diversity of experience and career options by choosing one of the following three Concentration Areas in their senior year.

A: Biomedical Research
B: Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship
C: Health Services and Consultation

Research Experience

  • Summer Undergraduate Biomedical Research Attachment (SUBRA)
We advocate early research exposure and engage students in their freshmen and sophomore years in our annual flagship summer research attachment, allowing them to discover their interests and potential in biomedical research, and to get a better understanding of what biomedical research is. Students will shadow members of the research team in the labs of our School’s professors throughout the attachment.
  • Capstone Research Project
Students who focus on Biomedical Research (Concentration Area A) will undertake an in-depth research project under the supervision of a faculty member from the School of Biomedical Sciences. The students will have a chance to put both the knowledge and skills they have learned in the programme into practice.

Internships and Work Experience
Students who focus on Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship (Concentration Area B) and Health Services and Consultation (Concentration Area C) will take a Biomedical Internship as part of their experiential learning experience, where they can apply the basic skills, principles, regulations and policies they learned about in the workplace setting and gain valuable insights into the biomedical industry. Our strong links with international research institutions, and local and international biotech and biomedical clusters allow us to provide a wide range of training opportunities for our students, including clinical and diagnostic laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, clinics, biotech/med-tech start-ups and unicorns, medical communication, finance and investment, and legal firms.

Articulation Programmes
Upon completion of the programme, students can opt for postgraduate studies in biomedical or health sciences-related programmes such as an MSc in Genomics and Bioinformatics, an MSc in Medical Genetics, or a Professional Diploma in Genetic Counselling. We also have a Study Option for students to pursue a BSc in Biomedical Sciences at CUHK and a Master’s degree at the University of Manchester.

Set sail in our Biomedical Sciences Programme and unleash your potential in the exciting field of Biomedical Sciences!

Career Prospects

The Biomedical Sciences programme equips students with solid knowledge of biomedical sciences and exposes them to innovations and developments in the industry. It is our mission to ensure that our students are well prepared to enter to the ever-evolving biomedical industry.

  • Graduate Studies
Our graduates also have a strong track record in securing master’s and doctoral degrees in biomedical sciences with a specialised area of interest at CUHK and other renowned universities, including the University of Oxford, Imperial College London, University College London and King’s College.
  • Career Options
There is strong demand for biomedical graduates in the thriving biomedical sciences and healthcare-related industries. Our graduates are very well received by our industry partners, including pharmaceutical, diagnostic and biomedical companies, many of which are located in Hong Kong Science and Technology Park or related industry clusters.

    Industry, Medical Media
Patent attorneys, scientists in biotechnology/biopharmaceutical companies, bioinformaticians, medical writers and media communication specialists.

    Health Services, Policy and Management
