Programme Introduction

Explore Your Journey with Our Chinese Language and Literature Programme

The Department of Chinese Language and Literature offers rigorous training in Chinese language and literature. Our curriculum offers a detailed exploration of the unique characteristics of the Chinese language, an in-depth introduction to theories of language and linguistics, and critical study of ancient documents, and both classical and modern literature.

Our students are expected to develop a strong foundational understanding of the field in general while specialising in their own areas of interest, providing a broad perspective, and they are free to choose and study topics of interest in various areas in Chinese language and literature. The programme has the following features: (1) core course requirements that establish a solid foundation for further study in Chinese language and literature; (2) more than 50 specialty courses, allowing students to tailor their academic journey and align it with their interests; (3) small-group teaching in creative-writing courses, fostering close teacher-student relationships; (4) a core course of independent research for final-year students, in which they learn research methodologies and critical approaches by planning and conducting research on a topic in preparation for a thesis written under the close supervision of a faculty member; and (5) writing courses that enhance the students’ creative-writing skills, resulting in our students consistently achieving recognition and awards in major literary competitions.

Our graduates display an excellent command of both written and spoken Chinese, are well-versed in the great traditions of Chinese literature, and are thoroughly prepared to take on new challenges as they embark on their professional or academic careers.

In the 2022/23 academic year, we expanded our offerings with a double major programme, in collaboration with CUHK’s Department of Translation. This programme caters for students with a keen interest in both the theory and practice of C to E (Chinese to English) and E to C (English to Chinese) translation. It’s designed to provide a comprehensive experience for students seeking expertise in translation within the context of Chinese literature and language studies.
