Programme Introduction

Innovative and Interdisciplinary Curriculum

The BSSc in Data Science and Policy Studies (DSPS) programme focuses on linking the fields of data science and policy science to equip students with the essential knowledge, skills and capacity to design innovative, big data-driven, and evidence-based policy solutions for complex problems in society. We offer a comprehensive, balanced curriculum on fundamental aspects of data, statistical and machine-learning knowledge, policy design and analytical techniques, as well as hands-on experience with data science software and visualisation tools.

The DSPS curriculum will:

  • Equip students with a full suite of skills in data science and AI, including skills in mathematics and advanced statistics, advanced programming for data science, machine learning, computer simulations, AR/VR applications, social network analysis, natural language processing, and advanced data visualisation. This suite of skills is what students need to become competent data scientists;
  • Enable our students to apply these skills in one or more of the following applications: architecture, communication, economics, gender studies, international relations, public governance, sociology, social work and urban design; and
  • Allow students to design their own concentration area and build their expertise in this area by choosing a mix of relevant skills and multidisciplinary courses (e.g., data science, migration and population policy).

Experiential Learning Programmes and Activities

In addition to classroom learning, the DSPS programme offers a wide range of experiential learning activities to apply what the students have learnt to address real-world issues and develop a global mindset, including:

  • visits to high-technology companies and AI-powered design institutes in Hong Kong and overseas,
  • internships,
  • overseas exchanges, and
  • capstone projects.

Career Prospects

Students are trained to be policy makers, data analysts, entrepreneurs, consultants and communicators to work in the public and private sectors, including:

  • Government organisations;
  • Policy think tanks, consulting firms, and local and international NGOs;
  • Science and technology companies; and
  • Multinational corporations.

If you are interested in this programme, please review the application requirements and deadlines specific to the respective admission scheme to increase your chances of getting accepted.
