Programme Introduction

Connecting history with the community

The History Department of CUHK strives to promote world-class research and teaching in the field of historical studies. We put great emphasis on diversity and freedom in academic pursuits, student-centred education, relevance of historical knowledge to daily life, and the cultivation of cross-cultural sensitivity and global-mindedness.

Our Public History programme, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, equips students with knowledge and practice of Public History. It offers training that puts history to practical use in fields such as cultural tourism, heritage preservation, historic sites, community history research and museum exhibitions. It also provides solid academic training in the digital humanities, museum and heritage studies, film and documentary analysis, and monuments and architecture. Students acquire interdisciplinary knowledge and skills regarding the interpretation and presentation of the past in various forms.

Our experiential learning includes historic sites, museum visits, community-based research projects, and the use of new communication technology for understanding history and promoting heritage. The programme is interdisciplinary and cross-cultural in nature and introduces students to case studies around the globe and in different periods.
