Other Major Scholarships

University scholarships not only give recognition and encouragement to outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students, but also provide financial support for students to participate in activities which are beneficial to their whole-person development.

University scholarships are usually granted by considering the following factors:

  • Academic merit
  • Community services
  • Leadership potential
  • Other non-academic performance, e.g. sports, innovation and creativity, music, arts

The University offers a wide range of scholarships and awards of which the major categories are as follows.

To be granted based on the academic excellence of the students, and may cover the tuition fee, academic expenses or living cost. For example:

  • AIA Scholarships
  • The D. H. Chen Foundation Scholarship
  • The Hong Kong Jockey Club Undergraduate Scholarship
  • Tung and Ngai Foundation Scholarship

To support students to participate in exchange, short-term overseas study programmes and other outreach activities. For example:

  • HKSAR Government Reaching Out Award
  • HSBC Overseas Scholarship which covers tuition fee, return airfare, board and lodging, learning expenses and living allowance
  • Innovation and Technology Scholarship

To support graduates to pursue a postgraduate degree or a second bachelor’s degree at the overseas institutions. For example:

  • Bei Shan Tang Foundation Scholarship (exclusively for CUHK graduates) supports the scholar to study a master’s degree programme related to education at Stanford.
  • The Esther Yewpick Lee Millennium Scholarship (exclusively for CUHK graduates)
  • The Rhodes Scholarship (1 award for HKSAR)
    – Both scholarship schemes cover the University and College fees at Oxford, return economy class air fare, and an annual stipend for a maximum period of 3 years.

To award students with enthusiastic participation in campus services and/or community services, e.g. CUHK Convocation Outstanding Services Awards, AIA Scholarships, The D. H. Chen Foundation Scholarship and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Undergraduate Scholarship

To support outstanding undergraduates for joining research exchange programmes at renowned institutions outside Hong Kong, e.g. Professor Charles K. Kao Research Exchange Scholarships

  • To give due recognition to students for their creativity and stimulate their passion in innovation, e.g. Professor Charles K. Kao Student Creativity Awards
  • To award students who can demonstrate creativity and outstanding achievements in humanities and natural sciences respectively, e.g. CUHK Convocation Outstanding Creativity Awards

To encourage students who have demonstrated achievements or talent in (a) Sports and games; (b) Music and performing arts; (c) Culture, arts and design; or (d) Innovation, science and technology, e.g. HKSAR Government Talent Development Scholarship

  • Some corporations offer both internship opportunities and scholarships to students. After completion of the internship, scholarship would also be granted to the students as encouragement.
  • To help awardees realize their career plans, e.g. HSBC Greater Bay Area (Hong Kong) Scholarship, Tung and Ngai Foundation Scholarship
