More than Physical

Physical Education (PE), as the term implies, is ‘education through the physical’. It aims to develop students’ physical competence and knowledge of movement and safety, and their ability to use this to perform in a wide range of activities associated with the adoption of an active and healthy lifestyle.

The five-year programme is offered by the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education of the Faculty of Education. It has a compact structure, which requires students to complete courses in three closely linked areas:

  • The Physical Education area, which provides a multi-disciplinary approach involving biological sciences, behavioural sciences and sports skills proficiency, providing students with a sound basis to develop health-related, high-quality physical education in the school setting;
  • The Exercise Science area, which explores the complex nature of human movement and examines the manner in which the human body reacts to acute and chronic exercise; and
  • The Health area, which examines the efficacy of physical activities, as well as theories and strategies for health promotion.

These are complemented by a fourth area, Professional Skills, for which courses are offered in team sports, individual sports, racquet sports, combat sports, and so on.

Physical Education develops not only the students’ physical side, but also their confidence and generic skills, especially those of collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking and aesthetic appreciation. These, together with the nurturing of positive values and attitudes, provide a good foundation for students’ lifelong and life-wide learning. PESH courses such as pedagogy, sociology and psychology related to sports and exercise, broaden students’ perspectives of physical education, far beyond just learning different sports skills. Students are also placed in primary and secondary schools for teaching practice and in sports-related organizations for internships.

Make Data-Driven

The data-driven era has created strong interest in and a need for analysing, storing, distributing and sharing massive amounts of data using sophisticated data analytics and machine-learning algorithms and methodologies, with applications in multiple disciplines, including science, social science, finance, public health, medicine, engineering and telecommunications. We have witnessed huge demand for data analysts in both local and global employment markets. However, designing proper data-driven solutions for analysing and interpreting massive amounts of information remains a non-trivial challenge, since it requires in-depth knowledge of both computing methodologies and statistical principles for problem solving, data collection, data modelling and analysis, and scientific experimental design.

The CDAS programme is designed to develop mathematical, technical and analytical skills to create solutions to lead data-driven decision making. It aims to equip students with the capabilities of applying both: (1) high-performance parallel and distributed computing for big data manipulation, and (2) data-driven statistical procedures, methodologies and theories for mining patterns, making predictions, and discovering patterns and insights from large and complex datasets. Therefore, the curriculum of the CDAS programme provides students with a solid foundation in data structure and algorithms, parallel and distributed computing system programming, statistical modelling and analysis, and large-scale statistical inferences.

The CDAS programme emphasizes the computational foundations of data science, providing an in-depth understanding of algorithms and data structures for storing, manipulating, visualizing, interpreting and learning from large datasets. Four specialized streams are offered for students to choose application fields according to their interests:

  • Computational Data Science

  • Computational Physics
  • Computational Medicine
  • Computational Social Science

Interested in Wealth? Become an Economist

History is full of episodes in which bank runs, irresponsible firms, and misguided policies have wiped out people’s savings. It doesn’t matter how much money you make—if you place it in the wrong hands, it can vanish in an instant. A solid understanding of how markets work is the surest way to protect yourself.

Economics examines money, interest rates, banks, firms, and policy with the seriousness they deserve. Our programme trains you to become an economist who truly understands why firms, banks, and even governments sometimes act in ways that put people’s wealth at risk.
Measurement and data analysis lie at the heart of our discipline. Through rigorous training in economic theory and advanced statistical tools for evaluating policies, our students develop sharp economic and financial insights and gain the confidence to navigate complex numbers and seemingly contradictory facts.

In 2022, the Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond, and Philip H. Dybvig for their groundbreaking studies on bank runs and monetary policy—research that continues to shape regulations and policies worldwide. If you take the creation and preservation of wealth seriously, join us.

Be an Urban Flâneur

A flâneur is a person who saunters around town and appreciates things. According to cultural critic Walter Benjamin (1892–1940), an urban flâneur strolls casually through a city, enthralled by its dynamism and diversity. Our Urban Studies Programme (URSP) admits about 20 prospective flâneurs each year, grooming them to become urban leaders who meet urbanisation challenges with humane and sustainable measures.

The URSP Programme aims to help prospective flâneurs like you who care about our cities develop the capacity to read cities. We prepare you with concepts and skills to understand the urban realm to make it a better and more sustainable place for humankind. The Programme empowers you with the ability to develop ‘planet, place and people-friendly’ cities by learning about different theories and schools of thought; the rigorous application of skills and techniques for urban analysis; and contextual learning of best practices in sustainable development, governance, planning and design.

Jointly organised by the School of Architecture and the Department of Geography and Resource Management, the URSP programme not only provides you with urban development theories, but also equips you with the capacity to appreciate the importance of aesthetics in directing urban development towards a sustainable and climate-proof future.
